The size, shape, and general appearance of your breasts affect how you feel. On one level, breast shape influences how you look in the clothing you’d like to wear. On another level, your breasts are associated with your overall maturity, sexuality, and femininity. We could go on but there is no need. If you’re exploring the option of having breast augmentation, you already have very personal reasons for doing so.
Dr. Carl B. Pearl is an esteemed, board-certified plastic surgeon with considerable training and experience performing breast procedures. To learn more or to schedule your consultation now, give us a call at 912-446-1985!
What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure that enhances your shape by enlarging the size of your breasts. Dr. Pearl does this using cohesive silicone gel implants under the chest muscle. The breast augmentation procedure has been safely performed for over two decades. In that time, advances in breast implant technology and surgical techniques have further improved an already-outstanding procedure.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for the Procedure?
Patients express a wide variety of reasons for seeking breast augmentation. Some wish to balance their breasts and improve symmetry. Some want to restore breast volume after aging or breastfeeding has left them deflated. Breast augmentation can also correct abnormal shape, such as tubular breasts. Whatever your reason for wanting to improve the appearance of your breasts, Dr. Pearl will look for other traits that confirm you are a good surgical candidate. These include:
- You are in good enough health to undergo surgery and also heal well from your procedure.
- You have good tissue elasticity and firmness.
- Your expectations are in line with the scope of improvement the doctor anticipates.
- The reasons you have for wanting breast augmentation are healthy and revolve solely around your personal sense of satisfaction.
- You can arrange enough time off work and other activities to recover well.
What Does the Breast Augmentation Procedure Involve?
When you arrive for your breast augmentation procedure, the team will meet with you to review your treatment plan and answer any last-minute questions. In the OR, you’ll receive general anesthesia. A board-certified anesthesiologist will monitor your vital signs and ensure that you are properly anesthetized for the duration of your procedure, which should take about an hour.
To reshape your breasts with implants, the doctor will make small incisions in the crease below each breast. After creating a pocket beneath the chest muscle, he will insert your breast implants through what is called a Keller funnel. The entire procedure is “no-touch,” meaning your breast implants will never touch your skin. The no-touch technique is done to minimize the risk of infection and other complications.
After observing the appearance of your breasts for symmetry and proportion, the doctor will close incisions with stitches and apply a bandage around your chest. After your anesthesia has worn off and you are safely alert, you will be released to a loved one who will drive you home.
Recovery and Aftercare
Your recovery period after breast augmentation is a crucial time of healing. This time affords your body time to regenerate healthy new tissue around the incisions and for your breast tissue to relax around your implants. It is imperative that you rest as much as your body needs during the week after your procedure. You may be a little extra fatigued for a few days due to the effects of surgery, anesthesia, and pain medication.
In addition to taking it easy and using your pain medication as directed, it will be necessary to curtain some of your normal activities for at least a few weeks. You may resume driving once you’re no longer taking prescription painkillers. You may walk, but not engage in strenuous exercise or lifting and pulling. You may need to be careful when lifting your arms overhead, as well. You’ll have to sleep on your back to avoid unnecessary pressure on your breasts while they heal. We anticipate that you will be able to resume most if not all of your normal activities about six weeks after your breast procedure.
Will the Results of My Breast Augmentation Look Natural?
It is our goal for you to achieve results that make you feel happy and confident! During your consultation, Dr. Pearl can discuss how your breasts may look based on the use of cohesive silicone gel implants (which closely mimic natural breast tissue), your natural body frame, and your desired implant characteristics. In general, it is recommended to stay within a certain range of size increase to retain the most natural appearance.
