Gummy Bear Implants in Savannah, GA

Women who decide to enhance the size, shape or position of their breasts have an extensive range of options today. One of the most recent introductions to the breast augmentation process has been form-stable breast implants, also known as “gummy bear” implants. Dr. Pearl offers these cohesive gel gummy bear implants to his patients as one option in breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Pearl will explain the different types of implants and help you choose the implant that is best for you.

What are Gummy Bear Implants?

Gummy bear implants are popular options for breast surgery patients because they contain a cohesive silicone gel that is thicker and more structured than the traditional silicone gel implants. Because of this more stable composite, these implants can retain their shape even if the shell of the implant fails. For a more lifted, push-up bra look, we also offer round extra gel gummy bear implants. These implants have a higher fill volume of silicone that perform like more cohesive gel but remain soft and natural. This higher fill volume of silicone increases upper pole fullness in the breasts by the implant.

Regardless of the shape, gummy bear implants are also a popular option due to their durability. Unlike traditional silicone and saline gel implants, gummy bear implants are unlikely to fold or wrinkle, and they are not easily distorted by pressure. Another reason for their high patient satisfaction rate is that patients typically experience minimal sagging and side-to-side movement after surgery.

Are Gummy Bear Implants Right for You?

Dr. Pearl may recommend breast augmentation if you:

  • Are in good general health with no severe underlying medical conditions.
  • Are prepared to take enough time off work and activities to recover from your procedure.
  • Have a healthy self-image and positive reasons for wanting breast augmentation.
  • Have realistic expectations about what gummy bear implants can (and can’t) do for you.

Selecting Your Plastic Surgeon

Whether you move forward with gummy bear implants or another surgical plan for your breast augmentation, your selection of a plastic surgeon will be paramount to the success of your procedure. It is critical to select a surgeon that not only has the experience and expertise to produce optimal results but one that will take ample time to listen to your concerns and goals, so your procedure is tailored to your specifications. The implants are only as good as the pockets in which they are placed. Dr. Pearl utilizes the Tebbett’s No Touch Technique to minimize bleeding, postoperative discomfort, and risk of capsular contracture.

Benefits of Gummy Bear Implants

You may have a variety of reasons for choosing gummy bear implants over other breast augmentation options:

  • Less risk of folding and rippling, which makes them a preferred choice for patients with less breast tissue.
  • Possible lower risk of capsular contracture, a sometimes painful complication that can occur with implant and cause the breast to appear less attractive.
  • If the implant tears or ruptures, it will continue to hold its original shape and size.
  • Less likely to change shape or position in the breast over time.

Options for Your Gummy Bear Implants

In addition to choosing the size and shape of implants that fit your body proportions best, there are other choices you will need to make as you prepare for your implant procedure:

Dr. Pearl will take great care to ensure the post-operative scars will be as invisible as possible.

Implant Placement

Dr. Pearl will place your implants beneath the pectoralis major muscle of the chest. Placement beneath the muscle of the chest provides some benefits over placement over the muscle and under the breast tissue. These include less interference during mammogram assessments and a reduction in the risk of capsular contracture (post-operative tightening around the implant).

Procedure Overview

Dr. Pearl will perform your breast augmentation under general anesthesia He will create incisions in discrete areas on the breasts to minimize scar visibility. Through the incisions, he will lift the breasts to form pockets where he will insert the implants. Incisions are closed using a layered approach that minimizes tension during the healing process and creates a better aesthetic result. The entire procedure should last about an hour, and you will be able to go home within a few hours after your surgery to recover in the comfort of your own home.

Are Gummy Bear Implants all Teardrop-Shaped?

Across the board, breast implants are made to be round or teardrop shaped. Originally, the highly cohesive gummy bear implants were made only in a teardrop shape. The purpose of this implant type was not only to reduce the risks associated with silicone breast implant rupture but also to maintain the most natural breast shape. The teardrop-shaped gummy bear implant holds more gel at the lower region, meaning more fullness will reside there. This shape mimics the natural slope of the breasts. However, that doesn't mean it's the best choice for every patient. Gummy bear implants are also available in a round shape. This type of implant disperses fullness across both poles, lending to a more "push-up" look.

Do Gummy Bear Implants Have more than One Profile?

Your breast implant shape is only one choice that will contribute to your final cosmetic outcome. Dr. Pearl will also discuss which implant profile is right for you, even when you choose gummy bear implants! Implant profile refers to the degree of forward projection from the chest wall; basically, how far forward your breasts project. Gummy bear implants are available in low, medium, and high-profile types. Each profile type may have the same volume but will look different. During your consultation, you can identify which size, shape, and profile are perfect for you based on your desired outcome.

Are Gummy Bear Implants Safe?

Overall, breast implant safety has been an important conversation that's been going on for years. Generally speaking, gummy bear implants exist due to the demand for optimal patient outcomes with fewer risks than were associated with traditional silicone implants. If a standard silicone breast implant were to rupture, the less viscous silicone could leak out into surrounding tissue. Because there are no obvious visible signs of silicone breast implant rupture, this seepage could continue for months or years without being discovered. Gummy bear implants are highly cohesive. The name "gummy bear" doesn't just resemble the name of the common candy; it refers to the fact that the silicone sticks to itself. Were a leak or rupture to occur, the silicone stays put. In this way, gummy bear implants have an incredibly high safety rating.

Dr. Pearl understands patients' concerns regarding the use of textured breast implants. Some models, particularly BIOCELL® textured implants from Allergan, have been associated with a greater risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). To be clear, this form of lymphoma is very rare and may not be limited to textured implants. However, it is a conversation worth having. During your consultation, please bring up all of your questions, including those that you have about the safety of your implant choice.

What is the "No-Touch" Technique for Breast Augmentation?

Dr. Pearl uses the "no-touch" breast augmentation technique originally devised by Dr. John Tebbetts back in the early 2000s. This technique utilizes special instruments, rather than the surgeon's digits, to create the pocket for the silicone breast implant. The unique surgical instruments prepare the pocket in a way that causes zero trauma to surrounding tissues. In fact, studies suggest that blood loss is nearly undetectable using the no-touch technique. With that, there is no need for heavy bandages, drains, or severe activity restrictions after breast augmentation surgery.

After Your Gummy Bear Implants

Recovery time after breast augmentation surgery is usually a few days, and many patients return to work within the week. Any postoperative pain, swelling and sensitivity will subside over the first few weeks. Scars from incisions will begin to fade after a couple of months. Regular monitoring of breast implants is recommended to ensure continuing breast and implant health. Dr. Pearl encourages patients to take it easy the first week after surgery. Many patients feel so good that they overdo their activity during the first week and become sore.
